What the New Motor Efficiency Standard Covers

The compulsory specification VC 9113 sets out detailed technical and administrative requirements for electric motors:

Scope of Coverage

The regulation applies to motors that:

  • Have 2, 4, 6, or 8 poles. Acts
  • Are rated for voltage above 50 V up to 1,000 V. Acts
  • Have a power rating between 0.75 kW and 375 kW. Acts
  • Include motors with non-standard flanges/shafts or geared variants. Acts

Exclusions

The specification does not cover:

  • Single-speed motors with 10+ poles and multi-speed motors. Acts
  • Motors with mechanical commutators (e.g., DC motors). Acts
  • Motors fully integrated into machines. Acts
  • Motors designed for submerged operation or specialized high-temperature smoke extraction above defined thresholds. Acts

The intention behind these specific scope limitations is to focus regulatory effort on the most common and energy-impactful classes of electric motors used in industry and commercial applications.
